ABOUT
The Lost Plot is about finding excellent fruit from talented growers and turning it into interesting and very drinkable wines. With minimal intervention and little mucking around, the wines reflect their terroir and vintage. The Lost Plot could also be, a little bit, about losing your mind in the pursuit of making elegant wines that are considered and complex, but not complicated.
We started out in 2014, when Stuart and Rachel Nix joined forces with Paul Old, an Australian winemaker based in France, to bring the idea of playing around with Australian fruit to make a more French inspired style of wine. We looked for interesting varietals to fit the bill, and have been working with great growers like Sarah Gough at Nagambie, and Merindoc in Heathcote.
In 2018 Paul decided his winery in the South of France, Les Clos Perdus, had to be his top priority as regular trips to Australia were taking their toll, and so handed over the winemaking reins to Matt Campbell, who has been making The Lost Plot ever since.
All our wines show Matt's approach of gentle handling to produce wines that keep their acidity and freshness. With savoury styles in mind, Matt has restrained the Australian 'fruit forward' approach, allowing the secondary and tertiary notes to show, giving an overall palate roundness and length.
We're looking forward to searching out new lost plots to bring more interesting varietals to Australian tables in the very near future. Stay tuned!
